Busby Cemetery The Busby Cemetery was located in the SW 1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 4, Township 28, Range 13 on the south bank of Cotton Creek, NW of Copan. There were only 36 grave stones or markers here, but many unknown graves. Because of the inundation of this site at the time of the building of the Copan Dam, the U.S. Corps of Engineers had this entire site moved. The new site was in the NW1/4 of the SW1/4 of the SE1/4 of Section 16, Township 28, Range 13, just north of the town of Copan and approximately two miles south of the original site. A total of 125 graves were moved to the new site in November 1979. In March of 2003, I was provided a copy of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cemetery Relocation Plan for Busby Cemetery, dated August 1978. Instead of adding data to existing records, I have entered the data from the list in addition to the data taken from Talking Tombstones. Therefore when you pull a record regarding a burial in the Busby Cemetery, expect two records for each person. The record that lists the grave # is from the Corp of Engineer's report. The other record is from Talking Tombstones. In this way, you are getting the data that is provided from both sources. As always it is up to you to this information and verify and authenticate your research documentation. If you would like further information concerning the relocation project, you may contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tulsa District Office or the Copan Project Office. I will try to find the numbers for these offices and will list them here in the future. Also, the relocated Busby Cemetery is now owned by the Delaware Indians and their deed to this cemetery is a matter of record at the Washington County Courthouse. A Special "Thank You" to Mary Nunneley for her assistance with this cemetery. NOTE: The Photo Links are not working at this time.
