Patterson Burials
Francis Patterson, born in 1841, and his two sons, Arthur and York A. settled in the 1890's on the South side of Cotton Creek about two and one-half miles North of Copan and one-half East. They were Cherokee Freedmen. When the Indian Territory was surveyed and the freedmen were given allotments, Francis Patterson and his son York A. were allotted land where they lived. However the son, Arthur was not allotted land in this area, possibly because he had died before allotments were made, for on the Patterson place on a high spot on the South bank of Cotton Creek overlooking a beautiful valley with a free flowing spring is the site of a burial ground. There are three or possible four graves. No man made stones mark the spot, but one hand carved sandstone bears this inscription P.
Another grave has been completely covered by large flat sandstones. There are traces of two other graves nearby. Just a stones throw to the Southeast are the remains of an old cellar facing East and a caved in well about twenty feet East of the cellar door. Some sandstones nearby could be the foundation of the Patterson homestead. In a direct Southeasterly line from the cellar is the old road visible for at least a quarter of a mile through the thick growth of black jack timber.
